Builders Plaque From Local Gasometer Is Preserved
Crewe Heritage Centre Acquires Builders Plaque From Town’s Gasometer
We’re please to announce that with the kind support of National Grid PLC we have acquired the maker's plaque from the gasholder that was located on their Stewart Street site, the plaque marks the construction of the gasholder in 1925 on a site that has been involved with the gas industry since 1876.
The plaque recently made the short journey from the site to the Heritage Centre where it was accepted by local Mayor, Councillor Benn Minshall. Speaking at the handover Councillor Minshall welcomed the preservation of a piece of local industrial heritage.
The Gasometer has recently been dismantled by contractor KDC as part of a nationwide programme as gasholders are no longer needed for storing gas as part of the local gas network.
While Crewe Heritage Centre remains closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak we anticipate that the plaque will be available to view in our Exhibition Hall when the museum reopens.
